Week 12:Danni: Question 4

How does new-media (the internet, cell-phone technology, etc) play a significant role in the success of reality TV, as well as cult TV series such as Buffy?

New Media plays a significant role in Reality TV and Cult TV in many ways. Some of these include:
  • Camrea angles and special effects: these due to technology have improved the quality of TV shows and can make the violent scenes or magical scenes in Cult TV so much more real.
  • In the reality shows where the 'contestants' are on a desert island or in a house with no communication, it is more interesting to see the people on the show suffer without the technology, brings more drama to the shows and with the world being so 'new media' obsessed seeing people without it or without the basics makes it more real and more entertaining.
  • For talent shows, the new media has helped with the success of shows like "American Idol" and "Big Brother" were we as an audience can text in or go onto the internet and vote for our favourite contestants. Thsi makes us as an audience feel we are apart of these contestants lives(we can make or break their careers by voting). It is the reason American Idol is running for over 10 years.
  • New Media also helps keep TV shows like Cult TV exciting and different. This is due to the audience going on the internet to watch shows like "Buffy" or "Doctor Who". Audiences then go out a make websites or youtube videos or fanfictions on their favourite shows. This has been made known by Buffy creator 'Joss Wheedon' when he stated that reading the fanfictions from the fans of Buffy helped him to create new ideas and scripts for Buffy. Thousands of people make Fanfictions about their favourite shows and this is a new media tool that has really helped in the success of TV shows as audienes love to fell involved.
These are just some of the many reasons why new media has made such a significant role in Reality TV and Cult Tv and their success. Audiences love to be involved, and new media allows them to be and keeps the shows we watch fresh and exciting.

  1. The second two points above are more relevant responses than the first. It would have been useful to have made reference to the critical reader for the week as there are some ideas ther that could help develop your response.
