Week 12-How have game shows influenced reality TV?

How have game shows influenced reality TV?

The rise of the gameshows was established on 2000, and since then there have been international bestseller. The gameshows captivated the audiences it shows the participants of the gameshow struggling in a bad situation, whether surviving in an island or whether getting the relationship wrong. The audiences empathise with the participants of the gameshow and that is what reality TV wants to achieve ultimately, to make that connection for successful series, for example survivor.

Reality TV series are sometimes found to be in an emotionally difficult situation just like the gamehsow. Themes of pressure and uncertain future keep the audiences on the edge of their seats. Reality TV was also created for entertainment and it highlight the social values, this is the reason why some may ask where is the boundary of it being ‘real’; if it is accurate and true. Therefore both genres rely on the irony and parody.

I believe that gameshows are hoax and it promotes untrue ideology of the reality, and reality TV develops. Although as viewers, we do get attached emotionally and as a result, we overlap the ‘real’ reality that exists in the programme although this was history and culturally done for decades. I think Big brother and Survivor was created for us to question our thoughts and our wellbeing, it made us be more aware in the sense that these do or might exist.

  1. I agree with you totally. There can only be to some degree that can be called 'real' but is mostly made up of interesting raw material that can be edited, cut, merged and so on.

  2. A good start but it would have been useful to engage more explicitly with both the Hill (2005) text - and a specific reality show as a way of supporting your response.
